About the Author

Alexandria Levin was born in New York City, and this is where she lived during her childhood. Her adolescence was spent in central New Jersey, where she began painting during her senior year of high school. Soon after graduating, at the age of seventeen, she moved by herself to Boston. She has also lived for extensive periods of time in San Francisco, Albuquerque and Philadelphia.

Ms. Levin is a mostly self-taught artist, despite having a BFA with honors in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, and has persistently been true to her own artistic vision. Exhibiting since 1981, she has always been serious about the career details of being an artist.

She has worked steadily as a part-time freelance graphic artist from 1982 to the present, and also spent ten years in the music business. During this whole time she has been dedicated to painting, exhibiting and continuing her own education by frequenting museums, conscientiously observing the world of art, and experimenting with materials, techniques and creative approaches.

Alexandria Levin has exhibited her oil paintings in galleries, museums, cultural centers and alternative spaces across the country since 1981. She created three painting-based installations in the 1990s in San Francisco, one of which was collaborative. Her paintings are in over 60 private collections from Boston to Tokyo, as well as two public collections owned by the state of New Mexico. She has received two major state grants, plus exhibition and purchase awards. She has lectured on her art in San Francisco and Japan, and has been awarded state grants in California and Massachusetts.

Ms. Levin’s paintings have been reproduced on book, magazine and exhibition catalogue covers, as well as in reviews, previews, special interest articles, and commissioned magazine story illustrations.

Her other art-related experience includes organizing and hanging visual arts exhibitions and various mixed-media events, and consulting as a working artist with an artists’ rights organization. Alexandria Levin has also taught painting and drawing, and has been the featured speaker for various teleclasses.

Writing has continually been evident in Ms. Levin’s life. She began writing poetry and essays at the age of fifteen, some of which have been published in various periodicals and literary journals over the years. With Painted Jay Publishing, she is now writing and producing whole books. In the independent spirit of do-it-yourself, and with a long and successful history of great writers doing the same, self-publishing has unquestionably been her first and best choice.

In September 2009 the author began online publishing with the blog;
Bright Pink Smile - a different sort of art blog.
